Re: Whats your favorite sport
I've played recreational soccer for over a decade, and have been a youth soccer referee for several years. It's a fun sport. I'm a terrible player and a mediocre referee, but it's a fun sport. =P
@martial-arts: I hold a white belt in three martial arts. =) Two of them are forms of Karate, the other is Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do sucks. It revolves way too much around kicking, and I'm terrible at kicking. Really, martial arts should never start out by emphasizing kicking -- it takes a long time to get good at it. Karate is better, it has you use your fists more. I actually didn't mind it that much, but had to leave due to scheduling conflicts.

Re: Whats your favorite sport
I see a serious lack of a "gymnastics" option. That's a sport! I've been doing it for more than 5 and a half years.
I've tried basketball, soccer, and tennis... but they aren't my thing. Martial arts look fun, and I'd probably enjoy doing them. I've never tried, though.

Re: Whats your favorite sport
My main interest in martial arts would be to gain the ability to easily defend myself (not that that's hard already, given that I'm a gymnast). If I did iaido, wouldn't I need a sword or at least a wooden stick to make use of my training?lonelypiro1337 wrote:You should do iaido!

Nope. You can do all the techniques that you learn in iaido with your arms/hands as well.night_knight wrote:If I did iaido, wouldn't I need a sword or at least a wooden stick to make use of my training?

Oh... well I'd still prefer to learn a self defense technique that mainly focused on my hands/legs/arms.lonelypiro1337 wrote:Nope. You can do all the techniques that you learn in iaido with your arms/hands as well.

Re: Whats your favorite sport
But you have to carry swords around, which might be difficult depending on the situation. Sure, swords are better, but only if you have access to them at all times. Body parts are with you where ever you go. I'm just saying that if you're going to train in some sort of self defense, it should be applicable where ever you go.lonelypiro1337 wrote:*cough*swordsarebetter*cough*

Re: Whats your favorite sport
Anywhere you can carry a sword you can carry a gun*; if you're going to be armed, might as well not pussyfoot around. The main benefit of martial arts, for defense purposes, is to teach you to defend yourself when you are not armed or -- e.g., when you're at school or most work places -- are not permitted to be armed. Swords are cool and all, and better than nothing, but there's rarely a situation where a sword is the best tool to defend yourself. Two weeks of handgun training > years of swordsmanship training, 95+% of the time.lonelypiro1337 wrote:*cough*swordsarebetter*cough*
*(In WA. In some states/countries carrying a gun is always prohibited; in others carrying a sword is also always prohibited -- another reason to learn martial arts.)

I never said that swords are always the best tool for self-defense, I'm merely stating my opinion that swords (katanas, to be exact) are really frikkin awesome. =P They're so awesome, in fact, that I would seriously consider saving up $50,000 (or more) just to get a customized katana from a Japanese swordsmith.

No argument there, katanas are pretty f**king awesome.lonelypiro1337 wrote:I never said that swords are always the best tool for self-defense, I'm merely stating my opinion that swords (katanas, to be exact) are really frikkin awesome. =P
...sweet f*ck, that's a lot of money. $50,000? I think that's overkill unless you have a godly amount of disposable income. You can get a top quality sword for less than a tenth of that.lonelypiro1337 wrote:They're so awesome, in fact, that I would seriously consider saving up $50,000 (or more) just to get a customized katana from a Japanese swordsmith.

I know, but I don't just want a top quality sword. I want a frikkin fancy top quality sword. And $50,000 isn't a whole lot compared to what someone could spend on a sword. I mean, you can get just a tsuba (the guard) that's worth $50,000 alone. =Pcreativename wrote:You can get a top quality sword for less than a tenth of that.
And I wouldn't want just one katana. I'd want to eventually have an entire collection of nihonto, including a tanto, a wakizashi, a katana, a nodachi, a naginata, and a tsurugi, as well as several others.

Re: Whats your favorite sport
Why does it need to be fancy? There's something to be said for thriftiness, and spending tens of thousands of dollars on swords and sword accessories is superfluous. I mean, if you because extremely wealthy, go for it; otherwise there have to be things you'd rather spend money on...lonelypiro1337 wrote:I want a frikkin fancy top quality sword. Jeez, or you could just buy a house -- and I mean buy a house, not just pay the down payment and get a mortgage. And I wouldn't want just one katana. Re: Whats your favorite sport
I'm pretty sure you need various weapons permits in order to carry weapons like that around. I knew someone who had a sword cane, and she was required to carry around a concealed weapon permit. If you're wondering, a sword cane looks like a cane, but the handle screws off and you pull a sword out of it, leaving the cane as a mere empty sheath.
